Chile is the main plum supplier
in the South Hemisphere.
All the varieties have juicy flesh and small
stones.
There are three main varieties to be found in
our market are: Laroda, with its intense red
skin, Black Beaut, which is more of a reddish-brown,
and the dark red Red Beaut.
Chilean plums are in season from mid-November
until April.
Varieties
This

with yellow flesh and
a sweet, good flavour.
It is a very versatile
plum, good for table
use, as well as for
jams and sauces.

is a big, black plum,
with a small stone and
sweet flesh.
A
blue/black or deep
purple plum with amber
coloured flesh. When
ripe, it has a very
sweet taste.
This plum variety
is juicy and sweet.
It has a brilliant
red colour, with
amber-reddish flesh.
Its good size makes
it an attractive
fruit variety.
This
is a longish shaped
fruit with an intense,
deep red colour.
It has a good taste,
with a firm, creamy
texture.
This
is a heart-shaped variety,
which when ripe acquires
an exceptionally sweet
flavour.
This
is a small sized variety,
with a pale purple colour,
yellow flesh and a sweet
flavour.
Storage
Store plums at 32°
F (0° C) with a relative humidity of 90
to 95%.Plums can be stored in
this condition for 2 to 4 weeks.
Display
This fruit
comes in a variety of colours, ranging from
yellow to red, to dark red and purple.
Select firm fruit that
is blemish free.
The best way to determine
the fruit’s ripeness is to lightly
touch it with your finger to see if it is
beginning to soften up. If it is not soft
allow it to mature for a day at room temperature.
Keep the fruit fresh and
well-ventilated.
Do not sell any plums that
are over-ripe as their taste deteriorates.
