Cherries. Cherries in Chile | Cherry Producers

Cherries are a very important fruit for the Chilean export market as they are ready at a time of year when there are no cherries in the North American and European markets. The cherries can therefore benefit from a market opportunity where there is no competition. In the Araucanía region, the cherry harvesting is carried out later than in the central regions which prolongs the country’s season.

Chilean cherries are available as early as October. However, most of the production occurs from the middle of November until the end of December.

Varieties

This is a very firm cherry, juicy, with a shiny skin and a deep or blackish red colour. The cherry’s flesh is white, around the stone, and is a bit crunchy.

Lapins is a big sized cherry. It is very firm, black coloured, sweet, juicy and round. It is harvested 10 days later than the Bing variety.

A very resistant variety, similar to the Bing in taste and firmness. It is slightly smaller and survives better at lower temperatures.
One hour of exposure to ambient temperature can damage them more than 24 hours to 32º F. For this reason it is essential to maintain them refrigerated.
